“Had a great day!” the 26-year-old pop princess said yesterday. “Just put the babies down for bed. We were able to sneak out and get Halloween costumes!”

Lynne Spears is used to seeing her celebrity daughters, Britney and Jamie Lynn, at the center of media firestorms. But this week, Lynne was the one in the spotlight. She hit the talk-show circuit to promote her new memoir, “Through the Storm: A Real Story of Fame and Family in a Tabloid World” (Thomas Nelson). “This is the mother’s version, not a tabloid version,” Spears tells NEWSWEEK, by phone from her Louisiana home. “They report an incident, but don’t tell you anything about it. You know that saying that a picture can say a thousand words? A picture can also tell a thousand lies.”

As Spears waited for her 3-month-old granddaughter, Maddie, to arrive—she’s on babysitting duty on a Friday afternoon to give new mom Jamie Lynn some downtime—the elder Spears spoke with NEWSWEEK’s Sarah Kliff about a specific chapter in her book, and life: her daughter’s teenage pregnancy, which the family announced last December on the cover of OK! Magazine. Jamie Lynn gave birth to Maddie in June; not long afterward, she granted OK! another exclusive with the first public photos of the baby. Her mother discussed the tabloid coverage, where the media went wrong and why Jamie Lynn’s pregnancy was treated differently than that of Bristol Palin, the teenage daughter of Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Excerpts:

NEWSWEEK: When Maddie was born, Jamie Lynn was on the cover of OK! magazine. The story got a lot of attention and some criticism. NEWSWEEK spoke to OK!’s editor about whether the piece glamorized teen pregnancy. W e received thousands of comments, with readers coming down on both sides. What do you think?
Lynne Spears: Do I promote teen sex? Of course not. Do I promote teen pregnancy? Needless to say, of course not. But when it happens, you deal with it and you do the best you can do. And you know what? She’s doing pretty well. But [despite] a situation that has fallen in her lap, she’s doing exceptionally well … What kind of pictures would have been more befitting? Should she have just not done anything and let the paparazzi clamor around … day and night?

Sometimes, when you’re a celebrity, you have to choose the lesser of two evils. So she decided to do the OK! Magazine, give a spread, give some pictures, and it really did ease off the paparazzi. It has lightened up her load a lot … Did it make it glamorous? It showed her with some cute little shots, having some fun moments with her little family. If they call it glamorous, well I’m sorry. But everybody knows that once you get a new baby, it’s the most cherished time of your life—but it is not glamorous.

One of the critiques was that Jamie Lynn never talked about the difficult parts of being a parent, like waking up at 3 a.m. when your child starts crying. [The complaint was] she only talked about the good, fun parts.
Of course she knows it’s going to be tough. You might lose sleep. Or maybe the baby’s a little difficult to organize. Or maybe you don’t get everything done that you want to do that day. You know what? Maybe the reporter didn’t ask those questions, I don’t know. But you know what really gets me? What would really blow them away?

What?
We don’t want this said, ’cause this would be glamorizing, but I will tell you a secret: her baby does sleep all night. What do you think about those apples? Maddie is the best baby I have ever seen. She is like a little angel. She’s so contented. She laughs and she coos and ahead of herself with her stages. But of course we can’t tell that because then we would just glamorize it more.

What’s it like to hear so many people trying to figure out what role your daughter’s pregnancy plays in society?
If you look back in history … We’re [in] a much more technical age, much more educated in some ways. But I think our generation is having babies so old … I think 20s, that’s a good age … [when women get older] their bodies are tearing down. When they start having babies it makes it so much more difficult and then they can’t get pregnant, because all the stuff is kinda set in … I don’t think people are looking at it that way. I think your 20s is a good time to have babies. Jamie Lynn has done beautifully with what she’s done. Could every other teenager do what Jamie Lynn has done? No indeed.

You and Jamie Lynn got some negative press when she got pregnant so young. But more recently, 17-year-old Bristol Palin, and her mother, Sarah Palin, the Republican vice presidential candidate, found themselves in a similar situation. And the public reaction has been different.
It’s a totally different reaction. It’s as if [Sarah Palin] became celebrated. I mean, the mother, Palin, was celebrated for this. Every woman in the world has applauded her strength and her convictions and poor little old Jamie Lynn—you saw how she was crucified. Everybody did, firsthand … I just feel like it’s been a very hypocritical situation.

What advice would you give the Palin family, having been through a pretty similar situation?
I really can’t give advice. I wouldn’t give advice because everybody’s situation is different. I would never tell anybody else what to do with their child. I would never attempt to make them think I knew more about their child. Even if they were to ask, I would tell them dig deep, what do you think?

That headline is probably going to be the first words out of the mouth of whatever guy they arrest from the Wal-Mart where Casey Aldridge took photos of Jamie Lynn Spears breast feeding her baby and holding the baby in some lingerie. Now, Casey, because he is a world class idiot decided to take photos of a bare breasted, underaged Jamie Lynn Spears to Wal-Mart because he couldn’t afford the $100 for a printer which would have printed out the photos for him at home. Plus, I guess he wasn’t content to just sit and stare at them on his PC or e-mail them to everyone he knew. Nope, he took them to Wal-Mart where some 18 year old kid took a look at the photos and probably decided he could make a buck selling them. He probably would have made a fortune except for one tiny problem. Since Jamie Lynn is under age, the photos of her bare breast could be considered child porn. There is also that pesky issue of copyright, but hey, he probably still would have got the money.

Now, everyone is going to blame the boy or boys for trying to sell the photos, and yes, she is a minor so they should be prosecuted, but hey, Casey is a dumb ass himself. First of all, what did he think would happen? And second, why was he getting prints made of a naked Jamie Lynn? Was he going to plaster them all over, or send them out as Christmas cards for his friends?

Now, the law is hazy when it comes to someone just breast feeding their child. However, if the boys at Wal-Mart are found guilty of any child porn charge, then there should also be a long look at Casey Aldridge. IF the photo is considered to be pornography, then Casey could be in trouble for distributing it or even possessing it because the law does not make any exceptions just because you may or may not be the father of the child seen in the photo breast feeding.

My guess is that the photo will not be considered child porn, that Wal-Mart will get sued by someone, and that the photo will see the light of day in the tabloids when Casey needs some money to buy a damn printer.

Or so is the rumor anyways. Originally, it was said that Lynne Spears was going to give preggo Bristol Palin a gift on behalf of Jamie Lynn, but that’s seeming to be false. Although now that the media hype is built up, she might make a trip to Nordstroms. The world is waiting Lynne.

“I just got off the phone with Lynne. I can tell you that she hasn’t sent her any gifts, but that she does support Sarah and, of course, can empathize with their situation,” Curt Handling, Spears’ publicist at the Thomas Nelson publishing company, tells E! News.

As Britney Spears’ world continues to improve, her little sister, Jamie Lynn, continues to battle rumors about difficulties with fiancé Casey Aldridge.

“Where there’s smoke, there is fire,” says one source who knows the Spears family well. “Although it’s not something Jamie Lynn is discussing, we all have our doubts that their relationship is solid. Definitely if not for (two-month-old daughter) Maddie, Jamie Lynn would have had enough of the stress of this relationship by now.”

The celebrity weeklies are obviously keeping close tabs on the story. Life & Style reports that Aldridge hasn’t been faithful to Spears, she’s felt “hurt and humiliated,” and “it’s not clear how she’ll handle him.”

“This family has been through so much,” says the Spears source. “We all really do hope this (relationship) can turn out well, that it can be the fairy tale Jamie Lynn wants. We’ll have to see.”

For months, rumors have circulated that Casey Aldridge has cheated on Jamie Lynn — but no one has come forward to confirm them, until now. In an exclusive interview with In Touch, 28-year-old Kelli Dawson reveals that she and Casey, 19, were romantically involved — and were still sleeping together when Jamie Lynn, now 17, was six months pregnant with his child. No fleeting hookup, Casey and Kelli’s relationship was both real and lasting — and it grew in intensity, even as Jamie Lynn announced she was pregnant. And, Kelli says, they still meet up on a regular basis. “I see him all the time, at least once a week,” she shares.

The pair first met in November 2006, at the home of her sister, Kim Toller. At the time, Casey was already dating Jamie Lynn, but the sexual chemistry between Casey and Kelli was instant. “We were both really attracted to each other,” Kelli reveals. “He totally instigated it and pursued me. His friends would tell me that he liked me, that he thought I was pretty.” The couple saw each other a few times and “kissed randomly,” but it wasn’t really “hot and heavy,” Kelli admits, until the spring of 2007. Though Casey and Jamie Lynn were still involved, Kelli insists, “You never knew if they were broken up or not, because it changed from day to day!”

The pair didn’t bother to hide their relationship. “Kelli and Casey have been a couple on and off for a few years,” confirms Jason Alexander, Britney Spears’ first husband and a native of nearby Kentwood, La. “They were a really tight couple, but I think it was hard for Kelli, having Jamie Lynn in the picture.”

Kelli says she and Casey stopped sleeping together a few months before Jamie Lynn gave birth to their daughter, Maddie. “It just didn’t feel right,” she explains. “He had to deal with the baby coming, and it had to stop.” She says the last time the couple had sex together was in March but “even after we stopped having sex, we would still kiss occasionally.”

Despite their worldwide notoriety, the young couple won’t be swapping their vows at some 5-star celeb-filled resort, but will be sticking close to home. Jamie Lynn’s new house is in Liberty, Miss. — just 30 minutes from her mom Lynne Spears’ house, Serenity, in Kentwood, La. — and it sits on three acres, which is more than enough space to put up a tent for a private, late fall ceremony.

“She loves everything about the area where she lives. She’s not going to get married at some luxury resort in the Caribbean or a hotel in Beverly Hills,” a friend of the bride-to-be tells OK!. “Her own backyard with just the people who matter most is more Jamie Lynn’s style.”

And with the wedding approaching quickly, Jamie Lynn is planning to look her best on the big day. “She’s already down to her pre-pregnancy weight,” says the friend. “She has the cutest figure!”

Of course, big sis Britney Spears will be her Jamie Lynn’s maid of honor, and Casey’s sister Ashlee will be one of her bridesmaids. And tiny toddler Maddie will be an integral part of the wedding — possibly in a basket decorated with flowers and carried into the ceremony by the bride and groom’s mothers.

Britney Spears made a surprise appearance at a fundraiser for Jenny McCarthy’s autism charity Generation Rescue Saturday in Los Angeles.

As guests like McCarthy’s beau and Charlie Sheen and wife Brooke Mueller made the rounds, Spears, 26, sipped on red wine.

Carrey’s daughter Jane also belted out a few Frank Sinatra and Jackson 5 tunes.

Spears, 26, “definitely looked happy,” a witness tells Usmagazine.com. “She was clapping and smiling a lot.”

It was Spears’ first public outing since reaching a custody agreement with ex Kevin Federline last week.

While Federline gets sole custody, Spears gets three visits a week from Sean Preston, 2 1/2, and Jayden James, 1 1/2, including two overnights.

If all goes well, she could have her boys roughly 40 percent of the time, her attorney, Laura Wasser, has said.

Wasser told the Associated Press the “difference” in Spears “from the beginning of this year to now is astonishing.”

Spears is spending her summer recording a new album.

Britney Spears’s custody settlement with her ex Kevin Federline, in which he retained sole custody of the couple’s two sons, came at a price.

A source close to the singer confirms she’ll now pay Federline $20,000 a month in child support, an increase from $15,000.

Federline’s lawyer, Mark Vincent Kaplan, also demanded and received $250,000 for his work on the case, the source adds.

“All Britney was seeking was a formalization of her increased visitation that she’s obtained over recent weeks, and the additional overnight,” the source said. “She won both of those requests.”

Spears, who is represented by lawyer Laura Wasser, currently sees her sons twice a week with one overnight. The source adds that she will get an additional overnight by year’s end, barring any setbacks.

At a press conference following Friday’s hearing, Kaplan declined to address any monetary settlement. “This has been a long ordeal [for Kevin],” Kaplan said, “and for it to be over makes him very happy.”

Since giving birth on June 19 to baby girl Maddie Briann Aldridge, Jamie Lynn Spears has taken to doing what any good first time mom would do — making sure her brand new daughter has everything she needs.

And, in an exclusive interview and photoshoot, the younger sister of Britney Spears tells OK! that being away from the shining lights of Hollywood is making it all easier to learn the ins and outs of first-time motherhood. “Around here, everyone has the same focus,” Jamie Lynn tells OK!. “The focus is family, and that’s a good way to live.”

The 17-year-old actress opens up to OK! about everything — from taking parenting classes to life inside the new home she shares with Maddie and boyfriend Casey Aldridge, to her first experience with labor pains.

“They’d told me it would be an eight- to 12-hour labor, and I was ready to have the baby in three to four hours,” Jamie Lynn tells OK!. “I had a perfect pregnancy and a perfect delivery. I was very blessed.”

While the former Zoey 101 star and her fiancé have not yet set a date for their wedding, the couple remains closer than ever. Jamie Lynn, who tells OK! that while her labor was induced, she gave birth naturally and without complications, says that Casey was the one person she wanted in the delivery room with her.

“Once I got in there, my doctor was just so calm and so good it was not bad at all,” she says. “I was just talking to Casey. And you know what’s so weird? I was asking him if he was okay. He was like, ‘Yeah.’ We were both so excited.”

A baby nursery is set up for little Maddie at the other end of the house, but for now her proud parents like having her next to them at night, so she sleeps in a bassinet in the same room as Jamie Lynn and Casey.

“She is very good,” says Jamie Lynn. “She’ll feed every two or three hours. When she wakes up in the middle of the night, I’ll feed her and she goes right back to sleep. There’s no screaming and crying.”

The proud mama continues, “We get up in the morning, and she gets her little bath. Then I get my bath. We have a routine, and I love routines. I’ve worked one out with her, and we’re happy going about our little life.”

Kudos to Jamie Lynn Spears for accomplishing something neither her sister nor Matthew McConaughey could do this past weekend: outsmart the paparazzi.

Many outlets reported that Spears and her new daughter, Maddie, left the hospital on Saturday, June 21, and returned to Serenity, the home in Kentwood, La., where Jamie Lynn’s mom, Lynne Spears, lives. Not so.

What actually happened, according to OK! magazine, was one car went to Serenity, but that car was actually occupied by new dad Casey Aldridge, Lynne Spears and a Jamie Lynn lookalike.

Once the photographers left in pursuit of the decoy Spears, security guards drove the real Jamie Lynn and little girl Maddie back to Liberty, Miss., where Aldrige and Spears own a home.
