State hospital regulators are placing the blame directly on Cedars-Sinai hospital for the overdose of Heparin that put Dennis Quaid’s infant twins in jeopardy. It has yet to be decided whether the hospital will face fines, but I guarantee a lawsuit is coming once the Quaids finish suing the makers of Herparin. The LA Times reports:
“This violation involved multiple failures by the facility to adhere to established policies and procedures for safe medication use,” the state wrote. “These violations caused, or were likely to cause, serious injury or death to the patients who received the wrong medication.”
Don’t worry, Cedars-Sinai. You’ve accepted responsibility for your actions and are making changes. This will all blow over. It’s not like you provided ammunition for further malpractice suits by publicly dropping the ball again and violating ethical guidelines by allowing a TV psychiatrist to exploit a situation involving a celebrity mental patient. Whoa. Those are by far the biggest words I’ve ever used in one sentence. Quick, get my camera.

Dennis Quaid and his wife Kimberly Buffington filed a lawsuit this afternoon against the makers of Herparin after their newborn twins were given a 10,000 unit dose at Cedars-Sinai Hospital instead of the normal 10 units for infants. The bottles for each dose look exactly the same. The couple is seeking more than $50,000 in damages, according to People:
The Quaids assert that the company knew of previous dosage mix-ups, yet failed to recall shipments of the drug or properly warn hospitals of the dangers.
“On a negligence scale of one to 10, Baxter Corporation gets a 10,” the Quaids’ lawyer, Susan E. Loggans, tells PEOPLE.
Glad to see the Quaids are seeking justice for the potentially fatal medical mix-up involving their kids. That being said, on a “using numbers to denote severity “scale of one to 10, Susan E. Loggins gets a seven for immediately jumping to 10 during an interview. You drop that bomb in the courtroom. I’m not even a lawyer and I know that’s a rookie mistake. Granted, I’ve been sued in several (hundred) paternity cases, but still.
Dennis Quaid and Kimberly Buffington filed a lawsuit in Chicago today against the drug company, Baxter Healthcare, after their twin newborns were given the wrong dose of Heparin. They were in critical condition for a while, but are said to be doing better.Â
Dennis’ lawyer said they want to prevent this to happening to anybody else. There have been several cases of the same thing happening to other people and babies. Dennis’ lawyer said that the 10 unit vial looks exactly like the 10,000 unit vial. The vials have different color lids though. Click here to see a picture of them.Â
I’m not a lawyer, so call me naive, but shouldn’t he sue the hospital too? I mean, they are the ones who gave his babies the wrong dose? This is why I’m not a nurse, because I probably wouldn’t look at the labels that closely either. That and I’d probably get fired for “testing the merchandise.”
At least his babies are going to be ok, though. Â

Dennis Quaid’s newborn twins were accidentally given a massive dose of Herparin - an anti-coagulant - at Cedars-Sinai Hospital on Sunday. The twin babies Thomas Boone and Zoe Grace, who were born November 8, are in the neo-natal intensive care unit after receiving 10,000 units of the anti-coagulant. To emphasize the seriousness of this mistake, babies are only supposed to get 10 units. TMZ reports:
Late Sunday night, both babies started to “bleed out.” Both babies are now at Cedars in the neo-natal intensive care unit where we’re told they are stable.
We’re told a technician stored the Heparin in the wrong place, and when a nurse grabbed the medicine for the babies without looking — it was the wrong dosage.
A source says the babies are now being given Protamine, which reverses the effects of Heparin.
Jesus, man, that’s insane. Poor Dennis Quaid and his wife. When I have a kid the last thing I want to hear are the words “bleed out†in relation to my child. I want to hear things like “My God, it’s the size of a buick. Nurse, fetch my sketch book.†Or “Did he have that pot of gold in his mother’s uterus the whole time?†This, on the other hand, is some serious stuff. All funny business aside, I hope Dennis Quaid’s kids pull through so his family can have a happy holiday.
Dennis Quaid’s newborn twins are reportedly in the neo-natal intensive care unit at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles after they were given the wrong dose of Heparin.
They were supposed to only get 10 units, but they were given 10,000 instead. TMZ reports that a technician placed the medication in the wrong place and the babies’ nurse grabbed it without checking the dosage. Both babies began to “bleed out” late Sunday.
They are apparently being given Protamine to reverse the effects. They are in stable condition. TMZ also reports that 13 other patients were given the wrong dose as well.Â
The twins were born on November 8th by surrogate. Â
That’s pretty terrible. I’ve heard about a few cases like this. Usually the adult dosage gets stored with the baby dosage and that’s when accidents happen.
Good thoughts to the Quaid babies. Â
