Campaigns of all ilks are heating up across the country, and this one’s no different. It’s a campaign with heart, a campaign to preserve our history, to secure our future and our children’s future. It’s a campaign to save, well, The Carpenters’ house.
Yes, that’s right. The Carpenter’s house.
Fans of 70’s pop duo are out to save the Los Angeles former home of Karen and Richard Carpenter from demolition.
Ever since it was featured on the cover of the group’s 1973 album “Now & Then†fans have descended upon the suburban Downey home. It’s placed in history was sealed when an anorexic Karen Carpenter collapsed in the house before she died in 1983.
It’s too late to save the annex where a recording studio used to be — the current owners have already torn it down, and now they want to demolish the rest of it, the LA Times reports.
Well, not if Carpenter fans have anything to say about it.
The campaign to save the main house is being led by Jon Konjoyan, 57, who is, as you’ve probably guessed, a really big Carpenters fan. “This house is our version of Graceland,†he said. “They were such a huge American act in the 1970s. So many people loved them.â€
Well, not everybody loved them, apparently.
The current owners of the house the brother-sister duo made famous say they’ve had enough of fans flocking to their home, interrupting their daily lives.
“In the beginning, we let everybody in. But honestly it became horrible, not only for us but for the neighborhood,†the owners’ daughter Jessica Parra said. “People peek in windows and take pictures. They leave flowers on the front porch.â€
Oh! The horror! Um, yeah, we can’t imagine anything worse than having flowers left on our porch (if we had a porch, that is). Annoying flowers v. die hard fans out to preserve American history? Don’t know about you, but I think we’re going to side with the fans on this one.
No word yet on whether or not Oprah is planning on endorsing this Carpenter campaign, but we’ll make sure to keep you posted.
